B.B. King Homecoming Festival 2011

Once again, Indianola, Mississippi becomes a tourist trap for the summer. And it’s all good… There’s plenty of happenings in and around the ‘Blues Triangle’ leading up to the BIG SHOW on June 11th. The following is the official press release:

B.B. King Homecoming Concert
Sat, June 11, 2011

For Immediate Release

May 6, 2011

INDIANOLA – Saturday, June 11, will be an important day in Indianola! Not only will there be the Main Street festival, Blues, Bikes, and BBQ, but changes have been made in the BB King Homecoming Concert. Both the festival and the concert have been moved to the grounds of BB King’s own museum! This venue change and the move to a Saturday night concert is a huge advantage that is a great opportunity for everyone to come and enjoy music all day long!

The festival fun will start Saturday morning at 9:00 in front of the museum. The Open Air Market will be in place with the added attraction of “Art at BB’s” which is a hand picked selection of fine Delta art and antiques. This is a wonderful chance to discover new artists or find just the right antique to buy and take home. Just across the way will be the Children’s Zone which will include a pet show and bike parade along with other fun attractions. Of course there will be local performers entertaining throughout the festival and the museum will be open for touring.

Food always plays an important part in any Delta event and this is no exception. The mainstay will be BBQ, but there will be plenty of other offerings such as “funnel cakes” and “chicken on a stick”. There will be a Backyard BBQ cooking contest for all who wish to enter. Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded after the judges make their decision. The entrance fee will be $35 per division or $125 for all four divisions.

The concert festivities will kick off at 2:00 and will feature Willie Clayton as well as other blues artists. The headliner of the evening will be BB King up-close and personal in the town he calls home. This is a new and different Homecoming Concert and one that will be long remembered.

Advance tickets are $10 and $15 at the gate, children under 12 are admitted free with an adult. Please call 662-887-4454 or 662-299-0018 for more information if you wish to be a vendor, a volunteer, or a participant in the BBQ contest. Tickets will be available at the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street and local banks. On line tickets can be purchased at info@mid-deltaarts.org.

And remember, the 308 Blues Club and Cafe will host a two night event starting Friday, June 10th, featuring live entertainment from our very own Mississippi Delta Regional Blues Challenge winners, Solar Porch. With Sid Barger’s heavy guitar attack and Marlow Dorrough’s droning beats; the duo have pioneered the 2-man Delta stomp sound that is taking the flatlands by storm. Solar Porch will often welcome visiting musicians to share the stage. Truly a show not to miss.

Be sure to also join us that following Saturday night. Stick around after the BIG SHOW and witness the Kevin Waide Project! The ‘Tupelo Gigolo’ himself and his uncanny comrades come from the hills to bless our stage with their North Mississippi style of blues and rock!

Advanced 2 night tickets are available for a limited time at $12. Contact info@308bluesclubandcafe.com for purchase information.

My son is a photographer. He went to the B.B. King Homecoming last year for the first time and came home with great pics and wonderful memories. He liked it so much that he went back this year! Apparently hospitality and good music are alive and well in Indianola, MS!

Is there a BBKing homecoming festival happening this year, 2012?
I visited Indianola and the BBKing Blues Museum in September last year and had an amazing time. Would love to come back and see BB in his home land!

Sorry for the late… late response, Duncan. I’ve been waiting patiently, but still no word on the 2012 festival. I’ve updated my blog with a message from the Executive Director of the B.B. King Museum, Dion Brown. I will surely keep everyone posted here.
